Purchasing travel insurance is one of the smartest things that you can do before going on a trip anywhere outside of your home country. If you can’t afford travel insurance then you cannot afford to travel.
Travel insurance can cover a variety of different things, including medical expenses, lost baggage, and trip delays. All of these things are outside of your control. Say you get an infection while travelling, as I have, and you need medical attention to clear it up. Do you really want to spend your hard-earned trip money on a doctor? NO! What if you are going somewhere remote and medical attention is far away? It will be expensive…
Fact: My front tooth is fake. I broke it a few years ago accidentally hitting myself in the face with a chair. While this didn’t happen on a trip, it was painful and expensive. If it did happen on a trip, it would have ruined my trip! Emergency dental services aren’t cheap. But travel insurance can help. If I can accidentally break my tooth moving a chair at home, imagine what else I can do when I’m on a trip, seeking every opportunity that comes my way.
Not only medical expenses, what if the airline permanently loses your bag? Or even temporarily, do you really want to spend your own money on new clothes? I don’t think so.
Travel insurance is great for expensive trips as it can cover trip interruptions or cancellations. Or on longer trips because the more planes, trains, and automobiles that you are in, the more likely something could go wrong.
Let’s recap the four reasons you need travel insurance for your next big trip.
- Life is unpredictable. You could hit yourself in the face with a chair.
- Airlines are unpredictable. Your bag could be misplaced, leaving you with the clothes on your back or whatever was in your carryon.
- Something could happen at home, meaning that you need to get back quickly.
- Something could happen to you physically. Be it a minor infection, malaria, or something very serious requiring an airlift.
Now, I know the most of the time, your trip will go seamlessly. But what if this is the time it doesn’t? I’m not trying to scare you here. I’m being realistic with you.

Seriously, just get travel insurance.
Before purchasing travel insurance make sure to read the policies wording and description of coverage. This will help you determine if the policy is right for you. Different policies can cover different things. Think about your needs and what might work best for you.
Where to Get Travel Insurance?
World Nomads is my preferred travel insurance. I have used them to go France, Egypt, Indonesia, Peru, Ecuador, and Australia. All of my coverage filled my needs.
While in Australia, I came down with a Urinary Tract Infection. This is a simple fix, you go to the doctor and get a prescription. But, there is no way of curing them on your own and if you do not go, it will get worse. At home, I know where my doctor is and could get it cleared up in a couple of days.
In Australia, I debated calling for a few days until the discomfort became too real. Once I finally decided to call World Nomads for help, I was at a doctor’s office in a matter of hours.
The process was so simple. They took down all of my information, policy number, symptoms, and location. A representative then called me back and emailed me a list of doctors’ offices in my area. The representative walked me through every step of the process.
I did have to pay for the expense up front, fortunately it was small, and then submit paperwork to get reimbursed.
World Nomads made the situation such a breeze. I think that I would have struggled a bit harder to find medical attention had a list not been provided for me.
Coverage can be purchased online, while on a trip so it’s never too late!
Seriously, travel insurance is the one thing that you hope to never need but will be so grateful to have if you.
